Old-Fashioned Goulash Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1/2 lb macaroni
- 1 1/2 lbs ground beef
- 1 large onion, diced
- Garlic salt, pepper, chili powder, and hot sauce to taste
- 2 (14.5 oz) cans whole stewed tomatoes, undrained
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- Tomato juice as needed
Instructions:
- Cook the macaroni according to the package directions until it’s al dente. While the macaroni is cooking, proceed to the next steps.
- In an extra-large skillet or a Dutch oven, brown the ground beef and diced onion together over medium heat until the beef is fully cooked and the onion is tender.
- Drain the excess grease from the skillet. Season the cooked beef and onion with garlic salt, pepper, chili powder, and hot sauce to your taste preferences. Mix the seasonings well into the beef and onion mixture.
- In a large bowl, use a potato masher to mash the whole stewed tomatoes until they are broken down into smaller pieces. Add the mashed tomatoes to the beef and onion mixture in the skillet.
- Stir in the ketchup to the beef and tomato mixture. Mix well to combine all the ingredients.
- Once the macaroni is cooked, drain it and add it to the beef and tomato mixture in the skillet. Stir everything together until the macaroni is well coated with the beef and tomato mixture.
- Taste the goulash and adjust the seasonings if needed. You can also add hot sauce at this point if you prefer a spicier flavor.
- If you like your goulash to be more saucy, you can add tomato juice to achieve your desired consistency. Start by adding a small amount and gradually increase until you reach the desired level of juiciness.
- Let the goulash simmer for a few minutes to heat everything through and allow the flavors to meld.
- Serve the Old-Fashioned Goulash warm. You can garnish with additional chopped onions or fresh herbs if desired.
- Enjoy your hearty and flavorful Old-Fashioned Goulash, a comforting and budget-friendly dish that’s perfect for busy weeknights or whenever you’re craving a classic comfort meal.
