Ingredients:
For the caramelized onions:
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- Salt and pepper to taste
For the burger patties:
- 1.5 pounds ground beef
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
For assembling the burgers:
- 4 burger buns
- 4 slices Swiss cheese
- Dijon mustard (optional)
- Lettuce leaves
- Sliced tomatoes
Preparation:
- In a large skillet, melt the butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté until they begin to soften, about 5 minutes.
- Reduce the heat to low and sprinkle the sugar over the onions. Continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are caramelized and golden brown, about 30-40 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Set aside.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, chopped parsley, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.
- Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape them into burger patties.
- Preheat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the burger patties for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness. During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of Swiss cheese on each patty to melt.
- Lightly toast the burger buns on the grill or in a toaster.
- Assemble the burgers by spreading Dijon mustard (if using) on the bottom buns. Place a lettuce leaf on top, followed by a cooked burger patty with melted cheese.
- Top each patty with a generous amount of caramelized onions. Add sliced tomatoes and cover with the top buns.
- Serve the French Onion Burgers immediately and enjoy!
