Ingredients:
- Italian sub rolls or baguette
- Thinly sliced deli meats (salami, pepperoni, ham)
- Sliced provolone cheese
- Thinly sliced red onions
- Sliced tomatoes
- Sliced black olives
- Shredded lettuce
- Banana peppers or pepperoncini
- Olive oil
- Red wine vinegar
- Dried oregano
- Salt and pepper
- Optional: mayonnaise, mustard
Preparation:
- Slice the Italian sub rolls or baguette lengthwise, but not all the way through, creating a pocket for the fillings.
- If desired, spread mayonnaise or mustard on the inside of the bread.
- Layer the thinly sliced deli meats, such as salami, pepperoni, and ham, inside the bread.
- Place slices of provolone cheese on top of the meats.
- Add thinly sliced red onions, sliced tomatoes, sliced black olives, shredded lettuce, and banana peppers or pepperoncini.
- Drizzle the filling with olive oil and red wine vinegar. Sprinkle with dried oregano, salt, and pepper.
- Close the sandwich and press it lightly to compress the fillings.
- Optionally, wrap the sandwich tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
- When ready to serve, unwrap the sandwich, cut it into individual portions if desired, and enjoy your top-notch Italian sub.
